A wonderfully unusual small antique Victorian lift top table dating to approximately the late 19th century. This petite table is full of architectural detail, with rich walnut wood grain, geometric incised carving, turned legs, delicate spindlework, scalloped trim, and decorative pierced aprons surrounding all four sides.
The hinged top lifts to reveal a surprisingly generous interior storage compartment, a feature commonly associated with Victorian sewing, work, and utility tables. Its compact proportions also make it wonderfully versatile today as a small accent table, stool, or decorative storage piece.
Particularly charming details include the repeating scalloped decoration beneath the upper molding, pointed geometric carving around the lower panels, tiny turned spindles, incised corner blocks, and turned lower legs. Its combination of useful hidden storage, petite scale, and exceptionally detailed woodwork makes it a wonderful antique accent piece for an English country, Victorian, traditional, collected, or historic-inspired interior. Circa 1870s.
The chest is in excellent antique condition with very minimal signs of wear; textured finish in the central wood panel on top, dark area on the bottom of box interior. A satin polyurethane topcoat has been applied throughout to protect and preserve the finish.
