A beautiful antique Victorian walnut whatnot étagère dating to the late 19th century. Tall and remarkably slender, this decorative five tier display shelf offers an abundance of Victorian detail while occupying very little floor space.
The étagère features five graduated open shelves with graceful serpentine fronts, surrounded by an intricate arrangement of turned spindle supports and decorative finials. A pierced and carved ornamental crest crowns the piece, giving the otherwise delicate silhouette an especially distinctive architectural finish. Turned legs continue the design at the base.
Finished in a rich, warm walnut, the varying depth and arrangement of the shelves create a wonderful tiered profile when viewed from either the front or side. Its open construction keeps the piece visually light while providing ample room for displaying antique books, pottery, framed photographs, collectibles, plants, or other treasured objects.
Traditionally known as a Victorian “whatnot,” this style of furniture was designed specifically for displaying decorative objects throughout the home. Today, its narrow proportions make it particularly useful as an accent shelf in an entryway, living room, library, bedroom, or bathroom. Circa 1890s.
The shelf is in excellent original condition with very minimal signs of wear; minor scratch on very bottom shelf. A satin polyurethane topcoat has been applied throughout to protect and preserve the finish.
