A beautiful antique mahogany demilune table dating to approximately the late 19th century. With its petite proportions, warm mahogany finish, and exceptionally graceful turned bobbin details, this is a wonderful example of the traditional Federal and Sheraton forms that remained popular around the turn of the century.
The table features a classic demilune, or half-moon, top constructed from multiple sections of solid wood and finished with a molded edge. The natural variation throughout the wood gives the top wonderful depth and character. Its base is particularly striking with three slender legs featuring beautifully executed spool and baluster turnings, transitioning into gently shaped lower legs. Coordinating turned stretchers connect the legs beneath the table and meet at a central junction, creating an unusually decorative framework while providing additional support.
At just 12 inches deep, this table has an especially versatile footprint. The flat back allows it to sit closely against a wall while the curved front provides the presence of a larger piece. It would be beautiful beneath artwork or a mirror in an entryway, tucked into a narrow hallway, used as a petite console, or placed in a living room or bedroom as an accent or occasional table.
The design has strong Federal and Sheraton influences and works beautifully in traditional, Colonial, English, cottage, historic home, eclectic, country, Victorian, Grandmillennial, and collected interiors.
The table is in great antique condition with very minimal signs of wear; minor nicks/flaws, a separating panel in the tabletop has been reinforced and won't worsen - see pics. A satin polyurethane topcoat has been applied throughout to protect and preserve the original finish.
