A beautiful antique cedar chest by West Branch Novelty Co. of Milton, Pennsylvania, dating to approximately the 1910s–1920s. This unusually decorative trunk combines the practicality of a traditional cedar blanket chest with the presence of an antique storage bench.
The exterior features rich warm walnut graining, turned feet, molded edges, fluted corner details and an especially attractive paneled front. Dark incised outlines emphasize the front panels, while carved vertical accents and a dimensional central ornament give the chest wonderful architectural character. A shaped gallery runs along the back and sides of the top, adding another decorative detail rarely seen on simpler cedar chests.
Lift the hinged top to reveal the aromatic cedar interior, retaining both the West Branch Novelty Co. maker's stamp and original West Branch Cedar Chest advertising label. The label identifies the chest as containing not less than 70% ¾-inch aromatic red cedar and promotes cedar's natural protection of stored textiles.
Its long, low proportions make this piece particularly versatile. Use it as a traditional blanket or hope chest, an end-of-bed storage bench, entryway bench, linen chest, or decorative storage in a living room or guest room.
The chest is in excellent original condition with very minimal signs of wear; light surface scratches on the trunks top panel. A satin polyurethane topcoat has been applied throughout to protect and preserve the original finish.
