A wonderfully distinctive antique secretary desk by Skandia Furniture Co. of Rockford, Illinois, dating to approximately the 1910s. This compact writing desk combines beautiful early 20th century craftsmanship with an unusually thoughtful feature; a built in interior electric light.
The secretary features a rich dark wood walnut accented by lighter figured panels across the drop front. Delicate dark outlining emphasizes the curving panel shapes, while a raised circular medallion, pierced fretwork sides, scalloped edges, and sweeping supports give the piece an especially decorative silhouette.
Unlock the secretary with its key and the front lowers to create a generous writing surface. Inside is a charming fitted writing compartment with small drawers, divided cubbies and open shelving for correspondence, stationery and desk accessories. An interior bulb socket provides illumination inside the writing area, a particularly interesting feature for a secretary of this age.
The electrical cord originally present on the piece was an aged fabric covered cord that had deteriorated significantly. For safety and functionality, the cord has been replaced with a modern cord. The interior light is functional and turns on to illuminate the secretary compartment.
Below the writing cabinet are two open display/storage shelves surrounded by dramatic pierced fretwork. The combination of closed storage, a functional writing surface and open shelving makes this piece equally beautiful as a traditional secretary, writing desk, small home office station or statement accent piece.
The original Skandia Furniture Co. label remains on the back and identifies the maker as Skandia Furniture Co. of Rockford, Illinois. The piece also retains its key. Circa 1910s.
The table is in excellent original antique condition with very minimal signs of wear; wear on the drop front interior, the fabric electrical cord to the light had to be replaced, very minor nicks. A satin polyurethane topcoat has been applied throughout to protect and preserve the original finish.
