antique-mid-19th-c-maple-mahogany-43767
Antique Mid 19th C Maple & Mahogany Extendable Table Compact Secretary 32.75" Wide

A beautiful antique mahogany writing table dating to approximately 1860–1880, featuring a unique ingenious fitted writing interior concealed within its compact, elegant form.

When closed, the piece presents as a refined hall table, with richly figured maple, rounded front corners, warm brass pulls, delicate molding and four slender turned legs. The understated exterior conceals a wonderfully functional writing compartment that speaks to its 19th century origins.

The front section hinges downward to create access to the writing area, while an interior writing shelf pulls outward, substantially increasing the usable writing surface. Inside are divided pigeonholes for correspondence and papers along with a charming small central drawer. A separate hinged section along the top opens to reveal additional concealed storage. These fitted compartments would originally have provided an organized place for writing materials, correspondence and other small necessities.

The maple has a rich reddish brown coloration with beautiful variation and figuring throughout. Turned details at the tops and feet of the long tapered legs give the table a distinctly late Georgian character, while the brass circular pulls provide a handsome contrast against the dark wood.

Construction details visible underneath, including traditional solid wood construction and early slotted screws, further support a 19th century date. Its compact proportions and concealed functionality make this especially versatile for a modern home. It could serve beautifully as a small writing desk, entryway table, small console, occasional table, bedroom desk or statement hall table.

Stylistically, the piece works particularly well in English, Country, Georgian, Federal, Traditional, Colonial, Grandmillennial and Ralph Lauren interiors.

The table is in excellent antique condition with very minimal signs of wear; very minor nicks/scuffs. A satin polyurethane topcoat has been applied to protect and preserve the finish.

32.75 inches wide
18.75 inches deep
31.75 inches tall

Flat Rate Shipping Cost $290

- or -

Free pickup in Columbia, South Carolina!

Reach out via the Contact tab or email us at info@hickorycovefurniture.com to inquire about free pickup or with any questions.

Please view all pictures carefully as they form part of the description.
